The Hub City: Hattiesburg, MS

Built on timber and trains, Hattiesburg, MS, is called "The Hub City." Today, its magnificently restored train depot welcomes Amtrak's Crescent as it travels between New York and New Orleans. The city's crown jewel, though, is a new African-American Military Museum, located in a 1940s-era black USO club. Visitors also enjoy street art, a Rails-to-Trails pathway and historic neighborhoods, creating the perfect mix for a great southeastern U.S. weekend getaway.

Just Back from Travel South

I just returned from a 2,200-mile roundtrip journey from Tampa Bay, FL to Birmingham, AL for the annual Travel South conference. My journey covered destinations throughout Alabama (Dothan, Montgomery, Birmingham) and Mississippi (Tupelo, Tunica, Vicksburg, Nachez and Hattiesburg).

I learned to shoot sporting clays in Tunica, convened with Elvis memories in Tupelo, enjoyed new street art in Dothan and explored Civil Rights and Civil War history in Montgomery. In Hattiesburg, I toured the excellent African-American Military Museum.

In Tunica, I strolled along the Mighty Mississippi at the Tunica Riverwalk Part. And in Birmingham, I interviewed southern state tourism directors to find out what's new for our readers. Check out our original Images of Birmingham on this page. We'll unveil other coverage soon!

Greeneville, TN: Honoring President Andrew Johnson

Just imagine the political rhetoric following the Civil War. Should the South be punished for secession? Or, should it be welcomed back with open arms. After Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Andrew Johnson assumed the Presidency. A staunch Constitutional supporter, he opted for reconciliation -- touching off a political tug-of-war that resulted in his impeachment. In a Senate trial, he was acquited by one vote. Who was this man? How did life in East TN shape his views?
