View Sea Turtles along Vero Beach
Georgina, a reader from Vero Beach, FL, reports that summer is a great time to see wildlife along Florida's East Coast beaches. She recently took a guided walk from Disney's Vero Beach Resort and saw a loggerhead turtle come ashore, lay scores of eggs, hide the nest and then return to the sea.
"It was truly memorable," says Georgina, noting that "many people don't know this, but Disney has marine biologists from the Living Seas pavilion at Epcot come to Vero Beach each summer; they patrol the beach each morning, marking and dating the nests."
Georgina says she has approximately two dozen nests in the proximity of her beach access area. When it's the right time, she says the biologists then dig up the nest and inventory how many eggs hatched.
People passing by are able to watch and ask questions of the turtle gurus. So if you're traveling to central Florida in summer and headed for the beach, ask about options for viewing or learning about sea turtles!
